Open debate sought on social services

PEMBROKESHIRE people will be watching with interest to see if an open debate about the county's social services department is allowed. An official request has been made to the county council chairman for an extraordinary meeting.

This has come from opposition leaders Cllr Joyce Watson, Labour; Cllr John Allen, Liberal Democrats, and Cllr Michael Williams, Plaid Cymru, and Cllrs Bill Philpin, a Liberal Democrat member, and Cllr Tony Wilcox, who last year defected from the Independents to Labour.

The county council has been asked to call an extraordinary meeting to:

Address the long-standing concerns of members regarding the Pembrokeshire Social Services Department.

Fully consider the performance and administration of social services and the reported concerns of front line staff.

Consider issues raised in recent reports, both in the local press and national media.

Review the recommendations highlighted in the joint review of the Social Services Inspectorate and the Audit Commission 2002.

Consider any appropriate action in restoring confidence and improving both standards and good working relationships in the department.
