'Modest' cash boost for organic sector

Organic farmers in Pembrokeshire are to get a boost from the National Assembly, but the payments on offer fall well below funding for their European counterparts.

Organic producers like Tom Latter can claim £35 a hectare for his arable or enclosed land at Penrhiw Farm, Goodwick.

The Organic Maintenance Scheme is designed to boost organic agriculture at a time when returns have declined.

Mr Latter welcomed the payments but described them as modest. "They are a little higher than in England but compared to what has been available in Europe for a number of years it is an extremely modes input," said Mr Latter, who produces lamb, beef, cereals and potatoes on 160 acres.

Although organic farming returns have fallen, he believes it still makes financial sense for smaller businesses like his.

"On a relatively small scale of operation it may be the only viable alternative,'' he said. He urged supermarkets to support British organic farmers by stocking more home-grown produce in their organic lines.

"It is very regrettable that supermarkets stock imported organic potatoes when we can grow them very well in this country,'' he said. He has scaled back his potato production to supply the local market only.

Countryside minister Carwyn Jones regards organic produce as a vital part of the future of food production in Wales.

The scheme demonstrates the Assembly's commitment to the organic sector, he said. "Not only are these farmers helping to safeguard our environment, but they are entering a market which offers significant financial opportunities."

The scheme will support new and existing organic farmers, providing £35/hectare on organic arable or enclosed land, and £10/hectare on unenclosed land subject to conditions.

Application packs are available from National Assembly local divisional offices or the Organic Centre Wales, Aberystwyth. Any farmer wanting to know more about organic farming can telephone 01970 622100.
