Division Four (West):
Llandybie 10 Pembroke Dock Harlequins 12
Gareth 'Frontera' Lewis was the toast of his Pembroke Dock Harlequins' colleagues as the flying winger scored a 78th minute try after coming on as a last-gasp replacement with his side trailing 10-7 against a determined Llandybie outfit which is still on the edge of the promotion race themselves.
Coach Lennie Scourfield decided it was time to gamble as he moved Mark Bradney into the pack instead of Phil Hughes and put Lewis into the three-quarter line - and skipper Darren Gibby got behind the Llandybie defence before finding Gareth and Lee Scourfield in support.
Clark James and Tom Lewis were also involved - and Lewis squeezed in at the corner following a 40 metre run to secure a so-vital win for the Quins.
This was always going to a be a difficult match for the Quins, not least because they had been inactive for five weeks, but they made a bright start as they were seven points ahead after three minutes. Good work by Richard McIntyre, Clark James, Ian Osborne and Colin Burton secured possession before No 8 Gareth Scourfield dummied a pass to create the space for his cousin Lee Scourfield to speed to the line, with Tom Lewis adding the extra points.
Llandybie replied with a penalty by Gavin Davies, but the home pivot also missed two easy other chances so that the Quins were 7-3 ahead at half time.
Play was equally tight after the interval, with Gareth Scourfield in top form alongside Kevin Bratcher, Phil Hughes and Mike Scourfield in keeping out the Llandybie pack, with Darren Gibby, Lewis and Gareth Clarke busy at the back.
Kevin Bratcher and Phil Hughes went close for the Quins, the latter denied a try because the referee blew early when he had ripped the ball out of a maul and was off on his travels.
But with five minutes remaining the Quins were rocked back as Llandybie finally broke through for Gavin Davies to score a try which he also converted.
It was then that coach Scourfield played his trump card and the Quins took a big step towards deserved promotion as 'Frontera' showed his pace and determination - leaving them with four home matches in their five remaining games as their opponents all have to play each other.
