Scarlet runners shine

Division Five (West):

Llanybydder 0 Pembroke 30

Pembroke maintained third place in the section with this convincing away win at Llanybydder, the Scarlets building up a 23-point lead with the wind at their backs and then containing the opposition until they grabbed their fourth try late on.

The Pembroke pack was again at its convincing best but coach Ossie Boswell now has at his disposal a very useful set of backs as Vyv Davies looked sharp as partner to fly half Phil Williams, Simon Cole and Nicky James are strong in the centre and outside of them Huw Purser and Brian Hicks are eager for action alongside full back Geraint Lewis, who had successfully made the switch from fly half.

But again it was the power of the Pembroke pack which gave Phil Williams an early chance to slot a penalty before Purser rounded off some quick hands from half way with a corner try.

Geraint Lewis also rounded off some good handling from deep positions to cross for a try and lock James Walters got on the try sheet after Richard Morris, Richard Mason, Gareth Jones and Martin Goodrick had been involved in the build-up.

Phil Williams converted one and landed a second penalty and the Scarlets were good value for their interval lead.

Llanybydder came more into the match after the interval as scrum half Emyr Jones, on permit from Carmarthen Quins, got involved but he was taken care of by veteran No 8 Sandy Allen and his youthful back row colleagues Owain Johns and Lee James.

The Scarlets grabbed the only points of the period when Vyv Davis sliced through for Phil Williams to add the extras - and maintain Pem broke's recent winning streak.
