Neyland maintain winning streak

Indoor Cricket Week Nine - Sponsored by the Martin James Health Club:

Neyland kept alive their hopes of a share in this year's indoor cricket crown as they beat Pembroke Dock and Fishguard at the Meads Leisure Centre in Milford Haven.

Their record so far reads: played four, won four. And if they can win the final series of games, organised by Wendy Bradshaw, they will have earned a play off with Whitland. For that to happen they must overcome a daunting challenge and beat Haverfordwest A and B teams next Sunday.

Playing first against Pembroke Dock, they reached a healthy 96 for 4 as Greg Miller led the way with 31 and younger brother Paul chipped in with 19 alongside Jeremy Charles (19 not out) - and with Paul Walkie the pick of the Dock bowlers with one for 12 in two overs.

The Dock were in trouble from the outset as Phil Davies bowled John Davies and Peter Kingdom was run out going for an impossible single. Jeremy Charles then grabbed two quick wickets and Paul Miller one as the Dock were hustled out for 41, with 'Mr Extras' the top scorer on 16.

Neyland faced a more difficult challenge against an experienced Fishguard side and were soon in trouble as Greg Miller was bowled from the first ball of the match, by Nigel Morgan. Jeremy Charles hit two sixes before he was dismissed for 20 with the score on 31 but although skipper Andrew Miller was out for 11 a battling 39 by Phil Davies soon had them back on track, ably supported by Jay Dunsford (18 not out) as they managed 101 for five wickets.

Paul Murray struck a vital early blow when Fishguard batted as he removed Daniel Williams and although Rob Sutton, Nigel Morgan and Nigel Delaney all managed double figures no-one was able to increase the tempo.

Last man Alan Millichip batted well for 18 but Fishguard were all out for 80 in the last over to maintain Neyland's unbeaten label.

In the final match of the afternoon, Fishguard really went to town against the Dock bowling as they sped to 142 without loss, assisted again by 21 extras. Rob Sutton (26), Nigel Delaney (33) and Gary Strawbridge (28) all retired as they passed the 25 mark, with Nigel Morgan (20) and Millichip (14) unbeaten at the end.

It was always going to be too big a target for the Dock to chase but as usual they gave it their best shot and managed 81 for five, thanks to 24 from John Davies, supported by Paul Walkie (15) and 22 extras.
