RECENTLY, I was invited to a most refreshing and original art exhibition, full of colour and light (literally) in the gallery at Emrys Arts.
I can remember faintly, as a little chap on the Mersey shore, beachcombing for bits of sea-worn glass and gazing at my fabulous new view of the world through the bottoms of broken bottles, and forming ephemeral collections of these 'jewels' in old boxes; only to make nothing of them in the end.
Richard Blacklaw-Jones seems to have some of the same fascination, only he has used his 'jewels' to good effect, creating delightful pictures that evoke endless possibilties for the imagination.
Richard finds these long discarded bits and pieces on a Pembrokeshire beach and uses them as a starting point for his imagination, and as a medium in their own right.
He creates a sense of space, pattern and form in his work to a surprising degree, while at the same time the pictures permit sufficient latitude to the viewer to use their own imagination.
The exhibition continues at Emrys Art, Haverfordwest, until March 27th. Admission is free.
