Preseli Men complete vital double

rugby- division five (west):

Pontyates 5 Crymych 24

Crymych took a giant step towards promotion as they beat Pontyates for the second time in a week, following their 58-0 home success with this deserved victory against a side which until last Saturday also had its eyes on Division Four.

Coaches Glyndwr Richards, Robin Davies and Nigel Bevan had warned their players that they mustn't be complacent and skipper Matthew Hill and Co clearly heeded this advice as they moved into a 17-0 lead and were always in control thereafter.

Pontyates certainly didn't help their cause as they had a forward sent off early on but Crymych maintained their composure despite a couple of cut heads.

They grabbed the early advantage with a penalty by Gareth Davies, the fly half also converting the first try of the game, which was scored by dynamic flanker Andrew Morris from a peel move at a lineout.

Then quick hands by Gareth Bryan, Gareth Davies and Wyn Jenkins allowed Matthew Hill to slice through and again Davies converted - and although Pontyates managed a try by Andrew Evans they were never able to wrest control from the Crymych pack as Andrew Phillips, Andrew Morris and Cennydd James swarmed everywhere and the tight five were always busy in the close exchanges.

Midway through the second half the issue was finally decided beyond doubt as Gareth Davies raced through for a cracking try which he also converted - and Crymych received a further boost with the news that previous front-runners Cefneithin had lost at Aberaeron.

So Crymych now have just one more away match and know that if they win their remaining six league games they will deservedly go up as champions!

Crymych: Carwyn Jones: Eurig Lewis; Matthew Hill; Wyn Jenkins; Sion Jenkins: Gareth Davies; Gareth Bryan: Robert Davies; Dylan Morris; Martin Edwards: D ylan Phillips; Emyr Davies: Andrew Morris; Cennydd James; Andrew Phillips. Replacements: Paul Jenkins; Geraint Evans; Eurig Davies; Jason Nicholls.
