Could homeowners do more to recycle?

DEAR EDITOR, - You recently asked (March 10th) about readers' thoughts on recycling. Over ten years ago we visited Canada and were amazed at the recycling they did - different colour bags for each item, glass, tin, plastic. The bags were just put out on certain collection days.

On our return to the UK we started, as many do, recycling paper, glass, tin and whatever we could.

We did appreciate the plastic recycling bin at Tesco. I understand that was withdrawn as it was only funded for a certain time. Could funding be found for that again?

It does not have to be sited at Tesco - it could be at one of the council-run establishments (if only local government can have such funding).

I understand there is a pilot scheme in certain areas of our county to put out recyclingitems on the same day as the usual refuse collection, in the orange bag. These orange bags are then taken to Carmarthen to be opened and the recycling items sorted.

Could we not, as homeowners, do the sorting and just use perhaps different colour bags - would this not free up some funding so other areas and families could have use of this facility?

I know our refuse collectors already have the black and green bags to look out for - they do an excellent job and I would not wish to make it any more difficult than it is.

Recycling, in my opinion, is one area that Pembrokeshire is certainly at the end of the line in.

When you visit the local agricultural shows etc, you see the excellent garden furniture and other items made from recycled plastics.

These items are manufactured locally and use by-products from the agricultural industry, I understand. Should we not ask if we could do more to re-use more of our waste? Waste not want not.
