Health fears over new mast

Potentially dangerous microwaves from BT's Tetra telephone mast at Hawthorn Rise, Haverfordwest, will affect 71 streets over a radius of a kilometer from the site, it was stated at a public meeting last week.

About 50 concerned residents and councillors attended the meeting at Haverfordwest Cricket Club when it was decided to demonstrate the area's concern by a mass attendance at the planning meeting which will discuss the issue.

Chairman of the meeting, Dawson Webb, said the additional antenna on the Tetra mast was of great concern because no-one would say what the potential effect on human health was.

Councillor Peter Stock said it was a contentious issue and warned that health could not be cited as a planning objection, although stress and fear could. He advised the protesters to campaign on that basis and pledged his full support. The town council also backs opposition to the proposal.

Various speakers referred to headache and sickness already experienced from the existing mast together with the effects on TV reception, while the point was made that stress was inevitably caused by fear of the unknown in view of the lack of specific information on the harmful effects.
