Stress to soar after CAP reform, fears

The Pembrokeshire-based co-ordinator of the Farm Crisis Network (FCN) says the charity is expecting a surge in calls as farmers struggle to adjust to the changes associated with CAP reform.

Jill Gibson said farmers were already in a hard-pressed situation with little room for manoeuvre. The paperwork associated with the new Single Farm Payment (SFP) would be a source of stress for many, she said.

"At this time of CAP reform, it is crucial to get the paperwork right, though there may be little time to devote to it," said Jill, FCN co-ordinator for south and west Wales.

"There are also many anxieties about difficulties with cash flow related to the timing of the SFP, and where finance is a problem, others can soon follow, leading, for example, to inability to comply with the various cross compliance regulations. It is important to seek help early if it is needed."

Farm Crisis Network is a registered charity established in 1993 as a response to increased evidence of stress and depression among the farming community.

Christopher Jones, national co-ordinator of FCN, said that although many farmers would love to see CAP reform go away, it must be faced.

"It is FCN's experience that some positive developments can arise around even the most difficult situation if farming people and families are helped to resume control of their lives.

"FCN has been here through all the farming trials of the last ten years and we are still here now, providing practical support and help.

"We understand the difficulties and strains facing many in the farming community. Talking confidentially with someone who understands farming can bring a real sense of relief."

FCN's helpline number is 07002 326 326 and anyone can ring, in confidence, from 7am to 11pm, every day.
