  • Financial implications face scheduled airport

Without the massive industrial foundation of larger connurbations or the broad-based tourism found elsewhere, the prospects of Withybush generating major income as a scheduled airport appear to be slim. Despite the considerable investment of the last few years, extending the east-west runway and installing lighting, improving navigational aids and building new hangarage, the airport lacks the 24-hour all-weather capability and necessary air traffic control approval to handle scheduled flights. Non-directional beacon and distance measuring equipment provide pilots with navigational assistance, but instrument landing systems are not installed and even if they were, they would be constrained by the close proximity of the A40 trunk road on the western perimeter. Any major scheme to develop the airport for more commercial services would not only be enormously costly, but would have to be decided by a public inquiry, which would consider environmental safeguards with regard to noise and safety and also the viability of such a venture. read more

  • View air network with caution

DEAR EDITOR, - For some time there have been rumours, consistently denied, that Pembrokeshire County Council wished to relocate the County Show away from Withybush. Last week's Western Telegraph disclosure now clearly confirms the rumours. Proposals for an 'intra Wales air network involving Haverfordwest' should be viewed with some degree of caution. I say this from personal experience gained during the period of Dyfed County Council when attempting with others to raise the profile and use of the airport. read more
