Resorts set to form long-term links with tsunami-hit resort

LONG-TERM links between Tenby and the Sri Lankan resort of Tangalle look set to be forged this week.

Solicitor Paul Cowper has found strong support from Greenhill School's headteacher, Chris Noble for the new charity he has formed to help Tangalle.

As the Western Telegraph reported last week, Mr Cowper and his family had a narrow escape as the tsunami raged, and have set up START (Sri Lankan Trust to Aid and Rebuild Tangalle).

"The response to the fund has been marvellous, and what is really exciting is the thought of a specific link between the communities of Tenby and Tangalle," he said.

"It will be an excellent focus for the pupils and I hope other local schools, councils, the tourist industry and the Chamber of Trade will want to become involved too."

Mr Noble will discuss ideas for fundraising activities with students, as well as passing on news of the project to the heads of Greenhill's 13 feeder primary schools.

"Long-term support for communities is vitally important," he said.

"This looks to be an extremely interesting development which can work on all sorts of educational levels, and will give us a personal focus for fundraising."

Donations to START can be made at any NatWest Bank (account number 71011374, sort code 55-61-35). For further information, contact Paul Cowper on 01834 813997. l A coffee morning in aid of START will be held at Swallowtree, Saundersfoot, at 10.30am on Saturday, January 22nd.
