The giant supermarket group Asda is to gain its first foothold in Pembrokeshire, following months of speculation.
The Co-operative Group has announced it is to sell its supermarket in Pembroke Dock to Asda for an undisclosed sum. The 81 staff at the Gordon Street store will be taken on by Asda as part of the deal.
The move is in line with the Co-operative Group's strategy to concentrate on developing in the small supermarket and convenience sectors where it is strongest.
Mark Roberts, the Co-operative Group's chief officer in Wales said: "We are pleased to have concluded a deal which ensures employment for the staff and will help us fund further store developments and acquisitions in our focus sectors."
The 29,000 square foot Pembroke Dock Co-op will transfer to Asda on February 28th. A spokesman for Asda said: "We are looking forward to having a store in the area and to welcoming our new colleagues into the Asda family.
"As part of the refurbishment, we will be providing some new fresh food counters, more grocery, more fresh foods and there will also be a small amount of general merchandise and homewear."
