Unfair treatment of Welsh regiments

Dear Editor, - As a Welshman and former serving soldier, I was dismayed to learn that in the Government's recent re-organisation of infantry regiments, Wales is being treated less equitably than Scotland.

In Wales our two infantry regiments, The Royal Welch Fusiliers and The Royal Regiment of Wales, will come together to form a new regiment called The Royal Welsh, which will include our TA Battalion, The Royal Welch Regiment.

Despite requesting that we be allowed to keep our identity and traditions, and be called, for example, The Royal Welch Fusiliers (lst Battalion The Royal Welsh) etc, we are to have our proud name demoted to brackets and be known as 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh (The Royal Welch Fusiliers).

Despite whatever assurances they give, this means we will soon lose our name and traditions.

In Scotland what the Welsh regiments have asked for has been granted and so The Royal Highland Fusiliers wilI be known as The Royal Highland Fusiliers (2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland).

We have asked for no more than has been granted to the Scottish regiments.
