Tsunami agencies link up thanks to local company

An electronic conferencing system which will connect all aid agencies working in tsunami-hit areas has been launched in Cardigan.

Whisper IT, a small telemarketing company, is co-ordinating the provision of the communications portal for agencies involved in the aftermath of the disaster - from the United Nations to medical workers.

Whisper IT director Alison Warburton said: "The portal allows the transmission of voice and video across the internet.

"We had a staff meeting just after Christmas and one of our young members, Matthew Dunn, asked how we as a company could help the aid agencies to communicate more effectively.

"We decided to use this new e-conferencing product to set up a system. The portal is being set up now and many of the companies we deal with are providing equipment."

Marratech is giving software, Nildram is providing the hosting, Geocom World Networks is giving the server and Logitech is providing web cameras and headsets.

"The UN is developing broadband connections so there will be fast access," added Ms Warburton.

"The system enables the main aid agencies to co-ordinate their work and will help ensure that the right aid gets to the right people."
