Doctor's rights have been denied

Dear Editor, - The scandalously disproportionate sentence of suspension of the consultant gynaecologist Chris Overton for having the temerity to make publicly known his disagreement with the controversial decision of the hospital trust to close several gynaecology beds has led me to reflect that if Dr Eirian Williams had not been so persistently and publicly outspoken in the 1960s about the then Regional Hospital Board's policy to downgrade services in Pembrokeshire then there might have been no hospital in Haverfordwest from which Mr Overton could have been suspended.

Mr Overton's arguments may or may not be valid, but his right to express them is fundamental.

DR C. LYN PERRY Retired GP Windrush 39 Haven Road Haverfordwest.
