TWENTY-three pupils at Pembroke School had to be withdrawn from an A-level exam recently after being taught the wrong text.
An investigation is now under way after the Chaucer text they had been taught was actually meant for the summer 2005 examination.
As a result no questions about the text appeared in the English module exam two weeks ago and students were withdrawn without sitting the paper.
"This was due to an error in the English department," a council spokesman said. "The source of the error is under investigation and the head of department has apologised to the students."
The work they had completed counts for 15% of the A-level and will be examined again in the summer.
Headteacher, Frank Ciccotti, said: "I am sure that the students will be very disappointed at this setback. I commend them on the responsible way they have handled the situation."
He added that the school's governing body had been informed of the situation and an explanatory letter sent to the parents of the students concerned.
Extra revision classes will now be arranged by English teachers to refresh students about this particular work before the exam.
