Pole dancing bid agreed

Pole dancing at Jammo's nightclub, Penally, will now take place once a fortnight after its public entertainment licence was extended.

The application, proposing to vary the current licence, which only permits entertainment of that kind once a month, was approved by Pembrokeshire County Council's licensing sub-committee yesterday (Tuesday).

Permission was granted despite significant opposition from the local community, with objections from residents and Penally Community Council.

One resident stated strongly that entertainment of that type does nothing to enhance the reputation of the village as a family-orientated holiday area.

Penally county councillor Carol Cavill, representing the community, added: "The publicity that this kind of event brings both locally, in the press and in the media, does nothing for the image of Penally, both as a quiet residential village and a peaceful holiday resort.

"This kind of entertainment adds nothing to the village economy and some say detracts from it."

Licence-holder Michael Haines defended the move and answered continued concern regarding anti-social behaviour in the village, which has the fifth highest proportion of over-65s in Pembrokeshire.

He said: "I abide by every rule and law I am given. Since taking over the club 18 months ago, I believe that the trouble and noise levels have reduced. I try my best to run it in a proper and orderly manner."

A request for the Trefloyne Lane venue to extend its hours from 10am to 3am was withdrawn.
