Local company wins £11m LNG contract

A PEMBROKESHIRE company has won an £11 million contract on the Dragon LNG terminal project at Waterston.

Ledwood Mechanical Engineering Limited, of Pembroke Dock, one of the UK's leading engineering construction companies, has been awarded the first major sub-contract by Whessoe Volker Stevin JV, main contractors on the new £184 million LNG terminal.

This comes as a major boost for Ledwoods and a delighted managing director Willie McLean said: "It dispels some of the myths that all the major contacts will go to outside contractors. Clearly that is not the case and we will certainly be encouraging other local contractors to try for work on these major projects.

"This is a big job and we will use it as a springboard to gain experience and expertise in order to compete with national and international companies for future work in the oil and gas industries.

"We intend to pursue all opportunities in the county and outside."

Whessoe said the awarding of the sub contract to Ledwoods demonstrated the company's commitment 'to employ wherever possible regional skills, services and resources'.

Jon Dale, managing director of Whessoe Oil and Gas Limited, said: "We have worked with Ledwood before and have been pleased with the high quality of their work.

"It is good to have a local company on the team and we are sure that between us we will make the most of this opportunity as we bring together skilled workers from south and west Wales to meet our demands."

Works sub contracted to Ledwood involve the fabrication and installation of the piping and steelwork for the new facility, together with the installation of specialist equipment. Prefabrication work will be done at Ledwoods and on site.

The Dragon project is due to be completed in November 2007.
