Residents say fire debris site poses safety hazard

A HEAP of charred rubble left from a devastating house fire in Trecwn four months ago is a hazard to local residents.

The pile of rusty nails, broken piping and wooden beams has become a popular playground for inquisitive children.

Mother-of-three Jacqueline Cowdery, of 14 Wesley Place, Trecwn, said: "It's an accident waiting to happen. We try to keep our kids out of this dangerous area, but children are interested in seeing the debris.

"The council has put up a fence, but children can climb over it or get through the gaps." The area has become a dumping ground and discarded food is encouraging rats.

She added: "I think having to look at the rubble everyday serves as a painful reminder of the fire and is a horrible eyesore for the people who live around here."

Horrified residents witnessed the devastation when 7 Wesley Place was destroyed in under 40 minutes on November 15th.

Tenants of the council house, Glyn and Elizabeth Davies, were in Edinburgh for a funeral at the time, but miraculously their 11-year-old daughter and Glyn's son's partner escaped from the house only seconds before an explosion blew out the windows.

Asked about the present condition of the site, a council spokesman said: "We had the area checked for asbestos and fenced it off.

"The council put the job of clearing the area out to tender and has entered into an agreement with a contractor to clear the site in the next few weeks."
