Cathedral city raises £16,500

A staggering £16,500 has been raised for the tsunami disaster, by the community of St Davids.

Around £9,500 alone was raised at a coffee morning, organised in the space of 48 hours by Rev David Menday.

"There was a phenomenal response to this event. In fact St Davids has seen a remarkable combined effort of fundraising," he said.

A charity auction organised by Ann Curran realised an estimated £2,500, and £600 was raised during a Church Council Cawl and Crumble morning.

Over £4,000 was also raised at a Wales Sings for Asia concert at St David's Cathedral on January 29th.

The concert held at St David's Cathedral, at which rugby star Gerald Davies, was master of ceremonies, included performances from the Morriston Orpheus Choir, Cathedral Choir and soloist Claire Watkins.

Rev David Menday put the success of the evening down to the extraordinary co-operation of all parties who pulled together offering their services for nothing.

"Even the coach company Pullman Coaches halved their fee.

"It is so easy to praise occasions, but the response within St Davids and beyond has been very special, with this being viewed as one of the best concerts held in the cathedral," he said.
