Cafe culture on way

European cafe culture looks set to hit Fishguard, as two new cafes and one bar/cafe are rumoured to be opening in the town.

The new cafes, however, coincide with the closure of one of the town's most popular gift shops.

Window on Wales, which opened in Fishguard seven years ago, will not be renewing its lease in August. It will concentrate instead on its branches in Solva and St Davids.

The owners of Window on Wales were not available for comment.

The news was met with surprise and disappointment in Fishguard.

A staff member said the general public are very upset that the shop is closing.

"Many people have said that it is very sad for Fishguard to lose such a popular shop," she said.

Paul Conti, who owns the premises currently leased by Window on Wales, was surprised that the lease would not be renewed.

"The shop will be greatly missed in Fishguard. However, I have already had two enquiries from interested parties looking to lease the building and one in particular is in a similar line of business," he said.

Three cafes are reported to be opening - Bar Five at 5 Main Street; The Flower Garden, also in Main Street; and Jane's Ty coffi, next to Jane's Wool Shop, High Street.

The owner of Jane's Wool Shop, who is planning to convert the premises said: "The idea for the coffee house came as a response to the promised regeneration in the area and also because a coffee shop is desperately needed in Fishguard.
