MR J. J. GALDO Herbrandston Jesus Joseph Galdo, known as Suso, of Herbrandston, died at his home on February 18th surrounded by his large family, including his six children. Suso's family moved to Pembrokeshire from their native Spain in 1967 and here he acquired his great love of the sea and nature. He was a keen follower of sport, especially rugby, and encouraged his sons in their football pursuits. The funeral took place on Friday at the parish church of St Mary's, Herbrandston. There was family flowers only, with donations to Paul Sartori Foundation, 31 Haven Road, Haverfordwest. Suso leaves many family and friends, too numerous to mention.
MRS I. E. M. LEIGH PEMBROKE The funeral took place yesterday (Tuesday) of Mrs Irene Elizabeth Muriel Leigh, ne McCarthy, of Pembroke Haven residential home, who died on February 18th. She was 103. Rev Anthony Gregory conducted the service at Pembroke Ferry Chapel, which was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. She had attended East End School, Pembroke, to learn needlework. During World War One, Irene made gloves and balaclavas for the soldiers serving in France and Belgium. Unlike her older sister, Gwendolene, she did not go on to college in Swansea, but stayed at home helping her mother on the family's smallholding. In her late 20s, she married a Pembroke Dock man, Albert Victor Leigh. They moved to Oxford where Albert used his engineering skills in the burgeoning car industry. They had two daughters, Anne, born in 1929 and Irene, born in 1934. After Albert died in 1952, and her daughters had married and left Oxford, she moved back to Pembroke to live with her sister and brother; her sister having just retired from being headteacher at Pennar Infants and Junior School in Pembroke Dock. After the death of her sister and brother, she moved to Pembroke Haven residential home where she lived for 13 years. Funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, funeral directors, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.
MRS M. HUYSHE BURTON FERRY (formerly of Pembroke) The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on Thursday, of Marian Huyshe, ne Preece, of Warrior Reach, Burton Ferry, who died on February 17th at Withybush Hospital. She was 78. Marian was born at 1 Golden Hill, Pembroke in 1926. She trained to be a teacher at Stockwell College, Bromley. This school was evacuated to Torquay during the Second World War and she subsequently took up teaching posts at Albion Square and Pennar Infants schools, Pembroke Dock and Cosheston Village School. She first met her husband Peter in 1939 when they were both pupils at Pembroke Dock County School. They were married in 1948 and spent most of their early years at 22 Charlton Place, Pembroke Dock, where they bought up their two children, Richard and Jane, before moving to Burton Ferry. Marian leaves to mourn her husband Peter; daughter Jane; sister Delys James; daughter-in-law Marilyn; son-in-law Adrian and four grandchildren Nina and Gareth Huyshe and Richard and Christopher Phillips. The service was conducted by the Rector of Burton and Rosemarket, Chris Barnes. John Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock carried out the funeral arrangements.
MRS D. L. VERRALL PEMBROKE The funeral took place on Friday, of Mrs Dorothy Verrall, of Holyland Road, Pembroke, who died on February 20th at Ashdale Nursing Home. She was 87. Rev Roger Jones conducted the service, which was followed by interment at St Michael's Cemetery. Dolly was a native of Pembroke Dock and the eldest daughter of the late Charles and Elsie Morris, of 7 Church Street. Predeceased by her husband Reg, she leaves to mourn her son Michael and daughter and granddaughter Jane and Hannah. Bearers were Charles, Alun and John (brothers) and Kevin and Stephen (nephews). Principal mourners were: Michael and Hazel Allen (son and daughter-in-law); Jane and Hannah Verrall (daughter and granddaughter); Totty Morgan (sister) and Charles, Alun and John Morris (brothers). Also attending were Cynthia Morris and Stephen; Andrea Morris; Rosemary Morris; Mr and Mrs John Neil; Pat and Geoff Lambert; Carol Morgan; William Sharp; Neil and Kevin Morgan; Chris Morris; Janet Morris; Sue Harris and Peter Bailey. MRS L. M. DAVIES DORSET (formerly of Pembroke Dock) The funeral took place at Hinton Park, near Christchurch, Dorset, recently, of Mrs Lettice Mary Davies, of Smugglers Lane, North, Highcliffe, who died on February 6th in hospital. She was 93. Originally from Pembroke Dock, Mary, known as Lettie or Tishy, leaves to mourn her husband Leonard Davies and nieces Mary, Edwina, Jennifer and Gillian, with their families and numerous friends. Mary trained as a nurse at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and was a nursing sister at the County Hospital, Haverfordwest. Later, Mary moved to London to pursue her nursing career, and married Leonard in 1948. On retirement they moved from London to Highcliffe on the edge of the New Forest, where they made new friends and acquaintances. Mary loved flowers and enjoyed the garden and kept in touch with nursing friends, as well as Pembrokeshire relatives and connections. She was the youngest daughter of Joseph and Alice Gibby, and was predeceased by her brothers Edward and George, and sisters Winifred and Maud. Donations in lieu of flowers can be given to the RNLI c/o Hinton Park Woodland Burial Ground, Wyndham Road, Walkford, Dorset, BH23 7EJ.
MRS D. L. GRIFFIN TENBY The funeral took place last Wednesday, of Mrs Daphne Louisa Griffin, of Cilrhiw, 9 Lower Frog Street, Tenby. Aged 81, she died at Tenby Cottage Hospital the previous Thursday, Predeceased by her husband William, she is survived by her son Nigel, daughter Angela, and grandchildren David, John, Gareth, Marie and their families. The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, when there were family flowers only, with donations in lieu to RNLI Tenby branch, c/o the funeral directors, W. and M. J. MRS K. HARVEY STEPASIDE The funeral took place on Monday, of Mrs Kay Harvey, of Folly Cottage, Ivy Chimney Lane, Stepaside. Aged 64, she died at her home on Saturday of last week. She is survived by her husband Peter, son Simon, daughter-in-law Misako, grandson Adam, step-daughter Sarah and also her pet dogs Domino, Tracker and Millie. The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, when floral tributes were received. Donations in lieu may be made to Breast Cancer Research UK, c/o the funeral directors, W. and M. J. MR R. L. FEETHAM CLYNDERWEN The funeral took place on February 21st, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, of Richard Llewellyn (Dicky) Feetham, of Tafarn Newydd, Clynderwen, and formerly of Oakfield, Llawhaden, who died at his home on February 15th, aged 48. Richard was one of the great characters of his generation. He had an incredibly fertile mind and a vibrant spirit. He was always competitive - from playing games as a young boy to playing football for Llawhaden. And he defended his point of view until he had won the argument. He loved working and his career took him from Whitland Creamery to running a business in Cyprus, and he had a variety of jobs in a colourful working life. He particularly enjoyed the construction business - from his first job as a tea boy at the age of 15, up to his final job, working with Simon Fussell. He had a real talent for words and mind games, completing the Times crossword with ease, and his general knowledge was remarkable, which made him such entertaining company when among his friends and family. A confirmed bachelor, Richard was fiercely loyal to his friends and relished the opportunity to help a friend in trouble. He had a vivid imagination and dreamed of making his fortune. In the last years of his life, Richard made his most fruitful investments in property, and the dream was becoming a reality. Richard's death was a shock, although he had been unwell for some time. But he refused to burden others with his health concerns. Richard was often the loudest person in the room but he was also one of the most private. The principal mourners were: Lena and Leslie (mother and father); Margaret and Brian (sister and brother-in-law); Annie (niece); Eric and Doris, Merfyn and Mary, Hannah, Kitty and Colwyn, Gwynfor and Mary, Glenys and William, Eirwen and Glen, Eryl and Jean, Brenda and Brian, Breian and Jean, Rhianon and Bruce (uncles and aunts); cousins and friends too numerous to mention. Unable to attend were Victoria and Annabelle (nieces), Joyce and several other family members and friends. The bearers were Simon Fussell, Graham Owen, Paul Phillips, Tim Phillips, Mike Blackborough and Mike Watts. The service was conducted by Rev David Faulkner, assisted by Rev Geoffrey Gwyther. BABY STACIA CALI BALDRY MERLINS BRIDGE The death occurred on February 21st at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, of Baby Stacia Cali Baldry, of 119 Tudor Gardens, Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest, aged four months. Stacia leaves to mourn Zoe Billingsley and Neil Baldry (parents); Chris and David Baldry, Julie and Bill Billingsley (grandparents); Ken and Sylvia Lark, Prue and Alan Revell, Carol and Rod Billingsley (great-grandparents); Claire and Mark, Emma and Rob, Liesl and Dan, Andrew (aunts and uncles); Zeph Holden (cousin). MRS D. M. HOWELLS PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on February 20th at Withybush Hospital, after a six-week stay, of Mrs Dorothy May Howells, of 30 Laws Street, Pembroke Dock. She was 93. Mrs Howells was a native of Lamphey and prior to her marriage she worked in domestic service. After bringing up her family, Dorothy worked regularly tulip and daffodil picking at Manorbier Newton, and at Stackpole Home Farm and later at Davies Steel and Pembroke Woollen Factory. Dorothy's main interests revolved around her family and home, especially her five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, Thomas George Howells in 1973, she leaves to mourn Irene and Arthur Evans (daughter and son-in-law); Brian and Olwyn Howells (son and daughter-in-law); Philip, Raymond, David, Sharon and Mark (grandchildren); Elinor, Morgan, Abby, Rhys, Ella, Evan and Jamie (great-grandchildren). The funeral took place on Friday, at St Teilo's Church, Pembroke Dock, followed by interment at Lamphey Church cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev Andrew Davies. The bearers were Philip Evans, Raymond Evans, Mark Howells (grandsons), Morgan Evans (great-grandson), Martyn Lewis (grandson-in-law), and Graham Thomas (family friend). Mr G. EVANS NEWPORT The funeral took place on February 11th of Glyn Evans (Glyn Cwmcenau) at St Brynach Church, Nevern. Officiating were Revs John Lewis (Nevern), Nigel Bryan (Newport) and Eric Williams, family friend. The bearers were John Evans (John Bach), Derfel Thomas, Mefyn Davies (relatives), Huw Roberts, Steve Watkins and Edward Williams.
MRS D. M. A. JAMES CARMARTHEN (formerly of Whitland) The death occurred on December 31st, at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli, of Mrs Delia James (ne Leggatt), aged 72, of 38 St Catherine Street, Carmarthen, widow of John Gerwyn James. She was a sister to Frank, Conrad and the late Malcolm; aunt to Andrea, Stuart, Wendy, Ian and Iona; great-aunt to James and Matthew, Adam and Sian, Natalie and Robert and great great aunt to Ashton; sister-in-law to Enid, Celia and Val. Delia was born and brought up in Whitland, where she lived for many years before moving with her husband John to Bethesda, Narberth, for a short time. They then returned to Whitland, where John died in 1969. She then moved to Carmarthen, close to St David's Hospital, where she worked for many years until her retirement. Relations, friends and work colleagues attended her funeral service and interment at St Mary's parish church, Whitland, on January 7th, where R. W. Kingsley G. Taylor officiated. The organist was Virginia Price-Evans. Delia will be greatly missed by her family. Mourners were: Frank and Celia, Conrad and Enid, Valmai (brothers and sisters-in-law); Andrea, Iona, Stuart and Ian (nieces and nephews); Margaret Thomas, Margaret and Dewi Griffiths, Derek Morris, Joan and Bernard James (cousins); Adrian Jones (friend). Bearers at the church were family friends Charlie Dunford, Lawrence Evans, David Davies and Hilliard Davies. Illness and distance kept many from attending the funeral. MRS M. L. CROCKER NEYLAND The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on February 16th, of Mrs May Loretia (Rita) Crocker, of 7 St Anne's Place, Neyland. She was 74. Mrs Crocker was a native of Milford Haven and, prior to her marriage in 1954, worked at the Grimsby Stores on Milford Docks. In 1960 she accompanied her husband to Hong Kong, where she lived for 30 years, before returning to Milford Haven on retirement. For the last ten years she lived in Neyland. Family left to mourn are Jack (husband); Mark and Elizabeth (son and daughter-in-law); Jayne (daughter); Ruth and Robin Allison (sister and brother-in-law); Lynwen Lewis (sister-in-law). The funeral took place on February 22nd, at St David's church, Hubberston, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The officiating minister was Rev Phil Marsh. The bearers were Robert Allison, Michael James, Andrew Lewis and Jonathan Lewis (nephews). MRS E. JAMES THE RHOS Friends and family learned with great sadness of the death on February 14th, of Mrs Elizabeth James. She died at Withybush Hospital, where she had been admitted the previous day. Affectionately known to everyone as Lily, Mrs James was 91. For the past few months, she had been a resident at Fairfield Home, Johnston, and for many years previously had lived at The Rhos. A native of The Rhos, she was one of seven children of the late Mr and Mrs David Evans and, after leaving school at the age of 14, went into service at Picton Castle, the then home of Sir Charles and Lady Philipps. Later, she worked in domestic service in other parts of the county before caring for her parents during their ill-health. For several years she worked with her cousin, Mrs Dilys Hanmer, at Fern House, Penally, and then at The Beach Hotel, Pendine, before returning to live in her home village, initially at Picton Castle Lodge and then in the family home at Rhos Cottages with her late sister and brother, Ethel and Phil. Her last job before retirement, and one she very much enjoyed, was working in the Picton Castle Gardens. She was a very practical person, able to turn her hand to all manner of tasks in and around the house and garden. Mrs James was extremely proud of the achievements of her son, Brian, an all-round sportsman in his younger days, especially cricket and rugby, and in his career in education. Brian emigrated with his family to Canada in 1960 and became principal of a secondary school. His sudden death five years ago came as a big blow to her. In recent years she had lived quietly in the family home and when she left to enter Fairfield Home it ended a 90-year association between the house and the Evans family. She is survived by Miss Olive Evans (sister); Mrs Anne James, Canada (daughter-in-law); Mrs Christine Barlow, Miss Sarah James and Mr Huw James, all of Canada (grandchildren); Michael and Brian Barlow, Canada (great-grandsons); Mrs Winfred Evans (sister-in-law), and by nephews, nieces and cousins, both here and in Canada. There was a large, representative attendance at the funeral on Friday. A service at Millin Cross Chapel was conducted by the minister, Rev Martyn Evans. Prayers were led by a former minister, Rev T. Arwyn Thomas, and a reading was given by the vicar of Slebech, Rev Mark Griffiths. A family friend, Mr Maldwyn Thomas, was the organist. Cremation followed at Parc Gwyn, where the service was led by Rev Evans assisted by Rev Thomas. Bearers were John Evans (nephew) and Rob, Tom and Jonathan Evans (greatnephews). Principal mourners were: Miss Olive Evans (sister); Mrs Anne James (daughter-in-law); Mrs Winifred Evans (sister-in-law); David and Eirys Evans; John and Christine Evans (nephews and neices); Rob, Tom and Jonathan Evans (great-nephews); Dilys and Dick Hanmer (cousins). Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Canada were unable to attend, along with Mary and Stuart Gough (cousins). There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for Diabetes UK c/o Mr John Evans, 6 Laws Street, Pembroke Dock, SA72 6DL. Funeral arrangements were by Roy Folland and Son, Cartlett, Haverfordwest.
MR B. D. WINFIELD HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place on February 22nd, at Uzmaston church, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, of Bryan Dorman Winfield, of 20 Ruther Park, Haverfordwest. He died aged 74 at Withybush Hospital on February 15th, after a short illness. Bryan was a native of Nottingham, where he lived with his parents and younger brother, Gordon. He moved to Barry, Glamorgan after the War and then to Pembrokeshire in 1961, with his wife Jeanne. For many years he worked for Boots the Chemist and Boots Farm Sales, subsequently running a family jewellers and book shop in Barry. After his retirement, he devoted his time and energy to various charities and organisations. He was involved with the charity HOPE in Honeyborough, Neyland, for over ten years. He was an operator and helper and the main organiser of the charity box collections. He sold charity Christmas cards in Haverfordwest Town Library, for Cards for Good Causes for the last 12 years. He was also a member of Uzmaston church PCC. He recently completed the design of a new footpath at the church, giving access for disabled people. He will be remembered for his lively sense of humour and storytelling. He leaves to mourn: Jeanne (wife); Caroline and Simon Carter (daughter and son-in-law); Andrew, Alex and Stephen Carter (grandsons); Fiona and Paul Llewellyn (daughter and son-in-law); Gordon and Alycee Winfield (brother and sister-in-law). The funeral service at Uzmaston church was conducted by Rev Mark Griffiths. A reading was given by Andrew Carter (grandson), a poem was written and read by Sian Llewellyn (granddaughter) and tributes were given by David Harris (HOPE) and Caroline Carter (daughter). The bearers were Simon Carter, Paul Llewellyn, Andrew Carter and Alex Carter. There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for Uzmaston church and Withybush breast care unit, c/o Mr T. Williams, 126 Haven Road, Haverfordwest, SA61 1DP. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas and Son, Freystrop.
MR R. M. DAVIES SOMERSET (formerly of Haverfordwest) Mr Roderick Malcolm Davies died aged 83 at The Wells Nursing Home, Henton, Somerset, on February 2nd. Malcolm was born in Prendergast, Haverfordwest, the second son of Major W. R. and Mrs Doris Davies late of Tan Bank. Malcolm was one of a family of five boys and five girls and only last September his eldest sister Doreen died. They had all attended school in Prendergast. After leaving school Malcolm worked as a junior shop assistant in the town and in 1940 was called up for Army service. Early in that period he met the Perry family, at church, when he was stationed at Yeovil. Later he was posted to Spennymoor and went back there to work after the war, being employed in the clothing manufacturing industry at Bishop Auckland. There Malcolm, who was a committed Christian and regular churchgoer, met Cicely Hodgson one of the younger members. They were married in June 1949 and brought up a family of five. Cicely died in 1990. Some time later, while on holiday in Somerset, Malcolm met Doreen Perry for the first time since those early years of World War Two. By this time she had retired and was living in Wells. Malcolm and Doreen married in 1994. Malcolm's health deteriorated and he became a permanent resident at Wells Nursing Home. The funeral service took place on February 14th, at the Elim Christian Centre in Wells, led by pastor Stephen Fowler. Tributes were read by Olwen Longstaff and Michael Davies, daughter and son and Margaret Ellison, daughter, read a message from Ben Davies, brother of Malcolm who was in Kenya. His brother Gwynne Davies sang a solo and brother Rev Reg Davies, read the lesson. The committal took place at The Cemetery Portway Wells also by pastor Fowler. The chief mourners were Doreen, Malcolm's wife; his children Olwen Longstaff, Michael Davies, Miriam Walton, Catherine Summerson and Margaret Ellison, together with spouses Ralph Longstaff, Christina Davies, Gary Summerson and Paul Ellison; 12 grandchildren present, Helen, Rachel (Mrs Parkin), Matthew, Megan, Andrew and Christian Davies; also Rachel's husband James, and baby Lewis, Gary Cartwright; Michael, Claire and Richard Summerson, Grace and John Ellison; also Colin James, Doreen's brother-in-law and Alan Perry, nephew. Doreen's sister Janet James and her sister-in-law Margaret Perry were unable to attend due to illness. Also Nanette Buffham and Penelope Smith, Malcolm's sisters could not attend. Malcolm's brothers and sisters present were Reg, Eric, Gwynne, Edna and Madge, together with Glenna Smith and Jessica Arnold, nieces. Also Grace, Valerie and Maureen Davies, Douglas MacDonald and Bill Paton, sisters and brothers-in-law. Floral tributes were from immediate family members only. Donations were made to the residents' fund at The Wells Nursing Home.
Mr F. C. H. Harries Neyland The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on February 15th, of Mr Frederick Charles Herbert (Charlie) Harries, of 5 John Street, Neyland, aged 83. Mr Harries was a native of Scarrowscant Lane, Haverfordwest, and had worked from 1938 to 1963 as a fireman and driver on Neyland railway, with Neyland Locomotive Department. Later he worked as a factory superintendent in Dowty Seals, Milford Haven, retiring in 1986. His main passion was rugby, playing for Haverfordwest Grammar school, then Haverfordwest Barbarians and Neyland. He captained the All Blacks before becoming the first Neyland player to earn his Pembrokeshire County badge by turning out for the county 15 times. He also enjoyed cricket, gardening, travelling and was patron of Neyland Rugby Football Club for several years. Predeceased by his wife Millie Harries, family left to mourn are: David and Harriet Day (brother and sister-in-law); Valerie and Graham Parish (niece and husband); Alec and Susan Day (nephew and wife); Lee Day and Nicholas Parish (great-nephews); Angela Griffiths (niece). The funeral took place on February 21st at a packed Bethesda Baptist chapel, Neyland, followed by interment at Neyland cemetery. The officiating minister was Rev Steve Lee. The bearers were John Laugharne, Denis Stolliday, Robert John and Peter Davies. MRS A. M. MORGAN PENFFORDD The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on January 31st, of Mrs Alice Mary Morgan, of Brynhyfryd Penffordd, Clynderwen (formerly Gellydeg, Princes Gate, Narberth). She was 80. She leaves to mourn Ruth and Arwel, daughter and son-in-law; Aled and Meinir grandchildren; Mrs A. John, Mrs D. James, sisters-in-law; Mr and Mrs D. Morgan brother-in-law and sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Unable to attend were Mr and Mrs E. John, Australia, Mrs H. Cryer, nephew and nieces; Mrs V. George Mr G. John, Mr R. John, Mr H. Thomas, cousins. Bearers were nephews David John, Anthony John, Robert Morgan, Michael James. There were family flowers only. Donations for asthma clinic and doctors at Narberth Health Centre may be sent c/o Mr O. D. Morgan, Holloway Fawr, Penffordd, Clynderwen, SA66 7HU. Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest carried out funeral arrangements.
MRS M. E. JENKINS MERLINS BRIDGE The death occurred at Withybush Hospital on February 6th, of Mrs Marion Jenkins, of 20 Glen View, Merlins Bridge. She was 43. Marion grew up in Milford Haven and then met and married Albert Jenkins (who predeceased her in 1982). They had five children. Marion had been ill with a brain tumour for a long time. The funeral was held at Albany church, followed by interment at City Road cemetery on February 11th. Predeceased by her husband, Albert Jenkins, she leaves to mourn: Christine and Smiler (daughter and partner); Caroline and Charlene (daughters); Christopher and Carl (sons); Howard (father); Wendy and Derrick (sister and brother-in-law); Lawrence (brother); Mandy and Valad (sister and partner); Paul and Sally (brother and sister-in-law); Alan (brother); Anthony (nephew); Trish, John, Melissa and Hannah (family friends); also many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. The bearers were Christopher (son), Lawrence (brother), Derrick (brother-in-law), and Anthony (nephew). The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glynn Thomas and Sons, Freystrop.
