Ceramic tile company floors the opposition

family-run business Ceramore, which produces hand-made ceramic tiles, is expanding into new premises to meet growing demand.

Ceramore was established by Rachel and Derek Williams in 2002, as a result of an idea had on their Spanish honeymoon.

The company designs, manufactures and installs ceramic floor tiles of virtually any shape, size, thickness and colour, and target the top end of the market.

Having cornered a niche in the market, Ceramore, with a staff of seven, has seen the popularity of its designs soar and has now outgrown its 700square-foot premises in Fishguard and will shortly move to a new 5,000square-foot site in Goodwick which will allow it to increase its production capacity.

The company, which recently began the Green Dragon scheme to achieve a sustainable and environmentally-responsible business, has come a long way in a short space of time.

Company Director, Rachel Williams, explained: "When we looked at the beautiful interlocking patterns which graced the floors of the Alhambra, it was clear to us that any home owner would be thrilled to achieve a similar effect in their house or garden.

"The difficulty came when we tried to resurrect tile making processes that had been lost to British manufacturing for generations. While looking for answers to this problem we contacted Know-How Wales."

Know-How Wales, managed by the Welsh Development Agency put Ceramore in contact with ceramic experts at UWIC, Swansea Institute and Coleg Sir Gar.

Although no institute had all the answers, each gave a piece of the jigsaw, resulting in a process that mixes modern IT technology with ancient craft skills.
