Craft festival - looking good

CROWDS flocked to sunny Saundersfoot at the weekend for the second annual St David's Food and Craft Festival.

A marquee on the harbour hosted 33 local and visiting craftsmen - double last year's number of stalls.

The highlight of the festival was the annual cawl trail.

Eleven establishments dished out more than 800 portions of cawl in commemorative mugs.

Those sampling the various broths voted Paul and Sue, of the Strand Antique Tearooms, as 2005's cawl cooking champions of the world and elsewhere.

Other highlights included a harbourside cawl cooking demonstration by SC4 chef Dudley Newbery.

He also judged the Design a Leek competition, awarding £50 prizes to Greenhill and Tenby Infants Schools.

A Welsh rugby shirt signed by members of the Six Nations' team was up for grabs in the raffle and local schools performed traditional music.

Local councillors opened the two-day event, organised by Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism.

Its 70 members run events such as the festival to promote Saundersfoot and build community spirit.

Vice-chairman, Alan Bowen, said: "We are totally non-profit making. Everything we make goes back into buying stalls and renting marquees etc for the next occasion."

The next occasion will be an evening celebrating the 60th anniversary of VE Day in May.
