Super champ Wayne

WAYNE O'Sullivan fought brilliantly last Friday night to win the Welsh ABA middle-weight boxing title for the first time.

The hard punching 26-year-old from Goodwick was stunned when he suffered the indignity of being knocked down in the first round.

But he resiliently bounced straight back and showed true grit and determination to courageously fight back in real style and eventually overhaul the deficit to beat Cardiff's John Phillips and lift the coveted Welsh crown on points.

The prestigious boxing finals was held in Newport, Gwent, and highlights of the big amateur fight night were televised on BBC late on Saturday night.

His trainers Steve Glover and Graham Brockway, both from the Merlins Bridge amateur boxing club in Haverfordwest, were del-ighted with their fighter's gutsy display.

"He thoroughly deserved it, because he's trained so hard to win this title," said Brockway.

"Last year he lost in the final, but he was determined that history wouldn't repeat itself."

Besides being a very good boxer, Wayne also plays soccer in the Pembrokeshire league first division for title hopefuls Goodwick United.

His soccer team-mates, family and many friends, are delighted that he has finally realised his boyhood ambition by becoming Welsh boxing champ!

There is every possibility that Wayne will fight in next year's Commonwealth Gam-es in Melbourne, Australia.
