Contract awarded for next phase

The second phase of the construction contract for the one billion dollar LNG terminal at South Hook, Milford Haven, has been awarded to the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company (CB&I).

The company will also undertake the first phase, which will involve vaporisation, sendout and ship unloading systems and the construction of three 155,000 cubic metres LNG storage tanks on the former Esso refinery site.

An existing jetty will also be refurbished to allow the LNG tankers from Qatar to berth.

The second phase will involve a redoubling of the facility's regasification and sendout capacity, refurbishment of a second loading berth, and an additional 155,000 cubic metres of storage tanks.

This work will begin in mid-2005, and will be carried out alongside phase one, which is due to finish in 2007.

The Milford Haven Waterway could become the second largest port in the UK in terms of tonnage of cargo when the south Hook project and Waterston's Dragon LNG development are completed.

o Construction of the LNG terminal at Milford Haven is part of the world's largest liquefied natural gas project.

A foundation stone was laid by His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani in Qatar, to officially launch the joint venture between state-run Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil. The project is said to dwarf any previous global LNG developments.
