Big plans for Sands

ThE new managers of Pendine Sands are planning major improvements.

Plans for the popular beach include attaining Blue Flag status; facilities for windsports and fishing; and year-round rangers.

An agreement has been drawn up for Carmarthenshire County Council to take over management.

The council took over temporary control at the request of Pendine Community Council and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) last June to ensure visitors' safety.

The county council's executive board has now been asked to approve a five-year management agreement.

If it goes ahead, measures to be considered include:

The continuation of a vehicle ban.

More off-beach parking with an overflow car park.

Rangers to manage the area throughout the year.

Codes of conduct to be drawn up with clubs.

Licences for netsmen and bait collecting.

An area for windsports east of the MoD slipway.

A draft agreement for the launching and safe use of small-boat fishing.

Ongoing discussions on jet skis and more powerful boats.

More events at the beach and better promotion of the facility.

A programme aimed at achieving Blue Flag status for the beach by 2006.

Provision of a lifeguard service in the future.

Senior manager for parks and countryside, Elwyn Hughes, said: "We do not want to lose the tradition of Pendine Sands and will be taking positive steps to encourage suitable events and activities. We are seeking to accommodate a range of uses and ensure that the activities are both safe and enjoyable."
