County shoppers back Fairtrade

FAIRTRADE Fortnight got off to a flying start with delicious treats made from Fairtrade products being served at the Haven Christian Centre, Pembroke.

Helping to raise awareness of sustainability and global citizenship issues in west Wales were Chris Urack, Tom Bean, Nicola Mallen and Maggie Thomas, of Global Connections, Pembroke, pictured with Aggie Chimanda, chief buying officer for North West Bee Products in Zambia.

Aggie met local MP Nick Ainger and went on to give a presentation on Fairtrade and traditional beekeeping in Zambia to Pembrokeshire College students.

She also visited Glan Cleddau School and the Farmers' Market in Haverfordwest The event was organised by Global Connections and the Haven Christian Centre, and the £144.25 raised will be split between the Make Poverty History Campaign Tradecraft and Fairtrade Foundation.

FAIRTRADE held a coffee morning at Milford Haven Town Council's headquarters last week. Some 30 people attended and were able to sample and buy Fairtrade coffees.

Entertainment was provided by Meads Infant School.

The event was part of a two-week programme, to raise awareness of Fairtrade's products and aims.

It included the group's first fashion show of Fairtrade clothing held at Broad Haven Hall.

PEMBROKE Country Market supplier Jennifer Watkins supported Fairtrade Fortnight by baking a dozen cakes to raise funds for the initiative to support producers in developing countries. Jennifer, of Gupton Farm, Castlemartin, who is pictured handing over the boiled fruit cakes to the Fairtrade volunteers at Pembroke Town Hall on Thursday, used Fairtrade ingredients in the cakes.
