Surfing dog checks out comfy cottages

A DOG needs a comfy cottage to come home to after a hard day's surfing.

So Gypsy, Newgale's surfing dog, is leading a team of canine consultants assessing local holiday properties for Coastal Cottages.

Managing director Sophie Evans said: "We pride ourselves on our ability to match cottages to individual clients' needs and now we are extending this service to the family pooch."

The company has consulted dog psychologist Dr Roger Mugford about the specific needs of different dog types and personalities.

Representatives from the elderly, timid, puppy, high-energy, sociable and water-loving categories will be inspecting properties throughout March.

Rosie and Ellie Fairweather, discerning cocker spaniels from Yorkshire, are in town to take part.

Owners Vivenne and Colin have chauffeured the canine connoisseurs to eight cottages in Pembrokeshire.

"Rosie cannot handle stairs so single storey cottages are good for her, whereas Ellie is still a puppy and enjoys having a garden to run around in," Vivienne said.

According to Colin, holidaying with a four-legged family is getting easier.

He said the information in Coastal Cottage's up-coming Canine Collection will allow pet owners to choose destinations with greater confidence.

"There is quite a difference between dogs allowed and dogs welcome," he added.

Rosie and Ellie were joined by fellow inspectors at Newgale beach last week, when celebrity spokesman Gypsy demonstrated her waveriding skills
