DEAR EDITOR, - I read with interest your recent story, 'My disabled child deserves a full life'. (March 2nd).
I feel the need to stress that the problems which Mrs James is experiencing with her daughter - lack of social opportunity etc - is not restricted to Pembrokeshire. Similar problems are apparent within Carmarthenshire and I believe it's a common problem wherever in the country one lives.
Disabled children and children with learning disabilities are able to partake in various activity programmes etc - if they meet a certain criteria.
If they have more specialist needs, there is little or nothing for them. This was the case with my severely autistic daughter when she was in childrens' services. (She has been in adult services for the past four years and unfortunately the problems are still the same).
Barnardos and the Red Cross have various play schemes and holiday breaks within this area, but my daughter never had access to them as her needs were too complex.
Problems with recruiting support workers are also ongoing in many areas, including Carmarthen. I believe this is due to the employment only being part-time and the fact that one could probably earn more money by stacking shelves in the local supermarket.
I agree with Mrs James, the situation is unacceptable. I also cannot see it improving. I can only suggest that she continues fighting for what should be her daughter's by right.
MRS SUSAN DAVIDSON 3 Gyfre Gardens, Abergwili.
