Rhys is Grand Slam mascot

Clarbeston Road schoolboy Rhys Wilson was the envy of all his school pals on Saturday when he ran out onto the hallowed turf of the Millennium Stadium as mascot for the Welsh team before the Six Nations decider against Ireland.

And the 12-year-old certainly brought them luck, as they went on to win the Grand Slam for the first time since 1978.

Rhys, who has cone rod dystrophy which will soon make him blind, was nominated as mascot by his father's boss - Ian Little, Haverfordwest Tesco store manager.

Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd (Wales and West) organised a special day for Rhys, his mother and stepfather Diane and Simeon Gregory.

Rhys was given a full Welsh replica kit before having his photograph taken with the team and got the players to sign a rugby ball.

Rhys, a pupil at Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest, said: "It was a brilliant game. Although I've been a mascot for the Welsh team at the stadium before, my feelings were beyond anything this time.

"The best bit was walking up the tunnel (pictured above with Wales' skipper Michael Owen) with the players and singing the national anthem. Wales getting the Grand Slam was the icing on the cake!"
