This whale of a find is spine-tingling

SAILING enthusiasts had a whale of a find between Solva and Porthclais last week.

Robin Stott, aged 49, of Maesyrhaf, Trefin, and his 11-year-old son Michael had taken out a boat with Jeff Tierney, 38, Pontypridd, and his eight year-old son Ryan, when they spotted a seven-foot whale spine wrapped around a buoy.

Robin said: "This is the find of a century. You could sail these waters every day of your life and never see anything like this.

"The children were really excited. I hope their teachers read the story, as I don't think they believed them."

Speculation over which species of whale the spine belonged to will be settled when DNA test results come back from the University of Aberystwyth.

Robin said the spine must belong to whale at least 20-foot long. Some believe it may have been from a pilot whale.
