Fears for centre's future

The future of the Goodwick Community Centre hangs in the balance amid reports that Pembrokeshire County Council is claiming ownership and is planning to sell the site.

A spokesman from Grwp Wdig action group has reported that the Theatre Fforwm charity has been told they must quit the building by July, when it will be sold.

Fears are that the site will go to a developer, as the building is located in the centre of Goodwick, overlooking the harbour.

The spokesperson said: "The site and money to build the community centre was bequeathed to the people of Goodwick by the then Urban District Council and a Mr J. C. Bowen in the 1960s."

County Councillor and Mayor, Moira Lewis, also chairman of Grwp Wdig said: "The building should remain the property of the community or at the very least, if it were sold, then the money should be put back into the community.

"It is not right for the council to take the money and run. It is their aim to sell it and our aim to stop them!" she declared.

The group spokesperson said that the county council was claiming ownership because the old Urban District Council had been absorbed into it.

"I have asked for proof of ownership from the director of planning Roger Barrett-Evans, who I believe is behind the proposal. I have not received any," she said.

"The council have been running the building, however no money has been put into the maintainence and upkeep of the centre for years, so in affect the council has run it down to such an extent that the centre cannot be effectively used.

The centre is currently used by Theatre Fforwm Cymru, Rainbows, Karate club, Job Centre Plus and it is also, used as a polling station.
