MRS M. J. LEWIS NARBERTH The death occurred at ward ten, Withybush Hospital, on March 13th, of Mrs Margaret Jane Lewis. She was 96 and was the elder daughter of the late Mr and Mrs D. G. Griffiths, of Bletherston, Penffordd. She had lived at Longridge for 22 years and had farmed successfully with her late husband Haydn, before retiring to The Crescent, Narberth , in 1968. She was widowed in 1970 and leaves to mourn her five children, 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren and four sisters. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Sara, in 1991; her brother William Griffiths and son-in-law James Williams. She will be remembered for her quiet, unassuming manner, coupled with an inner strength and grace. She will also be remembered for her exceptional needlework and much of her work remains at St Mary's church, Bletherston, where she was a faithful member before moving to Narberth. Prior to the service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on Monday, March 21st, a private service of prayer was conducted by Rev Geoffrey Gwyther at Mr K. Davis' Chapel of Rest, Clynderwen. The bearers were Dewi and Gwyn (sons) and Mansel and Fred (sons-in-law). At Parc Gwyn, the large attendance of family and friends showed the respect and esteem with which Mrs Lewis was held. The service was officiated by Rev Geoffrey Gwyther, and assisted by Nan Warlow and Rev E. Williams (both family friends). An apology of absence was received from Rev Geoffrey Eynon. The bearers were John Williams, Peter Evans, Barrie Beeken, Peter and Mark Lewis and Christine Lewis, with David Williams and Jeffery Evans (grandchildren) distributing the service programmes . Principal mourners were: Dewi and Gwyn Lewis (sons); Gladys Williams, Jean Evans and Gwen Beeken (daughters); Margaret and Marilyn (daughters-in-law); Mansel Evans and Fred Beeken (sons-in-law); John and Eunice, David and Doris, Louise, Mark and Bridget, Barrie, Carol and Keith, Christine (grandchildren); Rebbeca, Mathew, Nicola, Jessica (great-grandchildren); Mrs Maude Williams (sister), together with other relatives, friends and neighbours. Unable to attend were: Mary, Gwen, Anthony and Desley - Australia, Rosalind, Elinor, Cerwyn and Katrina - New Zealand (grandchildren); Miss Annie Griffiths, Mrs Doris Devan and Mrs Olwen Salmon (sisters). There were family flowers only and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. K. Davies, Clynderwen.

MRS J. BALL Pembroke The funeral took place on March 22nd, at Trinity URC Church, Meyrick Street, Pembroke Dock, with interment at Llanion Cemetery, of Mrs Jane Ball, aged 97. She was a native of Wolfscastle and Fishguard, but for the last three-and-a-half years had been cared for at Pembroke Haven Residential Home. Mrs Ball died at Withybush Hospital, on March 16th after a two-day stay. For the last 65 years, Mrs Ball had made her home in Pembroke Dock, where in her younger days she had been employed by the late Mr and Mrs Rake, Lloyds Bank, Pembroke Dock as a cook. Her other interests were: Trinity URC Church, Pembroke Dock; she was a member of the Welsh Cymrodorian Society, also a faithful member of Trinity Church, where she was a member of Trinity Sisterhood. She was predeceased by her husband, William Hogan Ball, in August 1990. Family left to mourn are: Mr and Mrs Dennis Morgan (sister and brother-in-law); Mr and Mrs David Morgan (nephew and niece); Katie Morgan (great-niece); Benjamin and Daniel Powell (great-nephews); Mrs Myra Morgan (sister); Betty and Ifan Jenkins, Mair Warren, Gwenda and Irwyn Davies, John and Eloner Morgan (nieces and nephews), also David and Cynthia Vittle, Valerie and Derek Bell, Rhiannon and Alwyn Williams (nieces and nephews). Rev Anthony Gregory officiated at the service and the bearers were Benjamin and Daniel Powell, Ifan Jenkins and John Morgan.

MRS G. M. VAUGHAN GWENT (formerly of Fishguard) The death occurred on March 14th, at The Royal Gwent Hospital, of Gladys May Vaughan, ne Jenkins. She was 95. Gladys moved to Cwmbran in Gwent in 1963 but was born and brought up in Fishguard, one of ten children of Mary and Isaac Jenkins. The funeral service was held at Richmond Road Baptist Church in Cwmbran and conducted by Rev David Bird, followed by burial at Panteg cemetery. Floral tributes were given by family, friends and neighbours. The principal mourners were: Glyn (husband); children Patricia, Robert and Hugh; Steve (son-in-law); Tricia (daughter-in-law); grandchildren David, Mathew, Bethan, Angharad, Rhiannon and Bethan; great -granddaughters Naomi, Ellie and Ashleigh, Howard Jenkins (brother) and several other close relatives and friends.

MRS W. M. REES PEMBROKE DOCK The funeral took place at St John's Church, Pembroke Dock, with interment at Llanion cemetery, on March 15th, of Mrs Winifred May Rees, of 17 Front Street, Pembroke Dock. She was 90. She died on March 8th at Withybush Hospital, after a nine-week stay. Mrs Rees always spoke affectionately of her domestic role at Cosheston Hall upon leaving school. She became a well-known and respected member of the town, when, with her husband, she owned and ran the Crown and Anchor Public house in Front Street. She was an active member of the WRVS and WI and prior to failing eyesight, a keen crossword and puzzle solver. She had a true love of gardening and was a keen reader, knitter, seamstress and cook. But her main interest was as a mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband, William (Billy) Rees in 1979. She leaves to mourn: George Rees (son and principal carer); Sheila Rees and family (daughter-in-law); Ken, Kay Thomas (brother); Glyn and Marlene Thomas (brother); Olga and Alec (sister); Lilian and David (sister); Jan and Stuart Reed-Harrison (granddaughter); Graham and Ruth Reed (grandson); Jackie and Shaun Howells (granddaughter); Jamie and Louise Rees (grandson); Karen and Joe Rees McCaffrey (granddaughter); Robin Rees (grandson); Jason and Wendy Williams (grandson); Terry and Joyce Rees, Dick Rees; over 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The bearers were James, Rees, Jason Williams, Robin Rees (grandsons) and James Reed (great-grandson). Principal mourners were: George (son), Jan, Stuart, Josh, Sarah, and Jamie; Sheila, Robin, Jamie, Louise, Karen and Joe; Khaya, Julia, Brian and Layla; Graham, Ruth, Clare James and Kim; Colin, Jo, Zosia and Caran; Jackie, Shaun, Gemma, Wayne, Kathryn, Rhia and Ellie; Jason, Wendy, Sam and Ben; Olga, Alec, Ken, Kay, Glyn, Marlene, Lilian, David, Louise and Dylan; Terry and Joyce; Dick. E. C. Thomas and Son, 31 Stockwell Road, Pembroke Dock, carried out the funeral arrangements.

MR D. J. PURNELL HAVERFORDWEST The funeral has taken place of Mr David John Purnell, who died peacefully on Saturday March 13th, aged 40, at his home in Shipmans Lane, Haverfordwest. He was a friendly and well-liked local man and will be greatly missed. David enjoyed many pastimes, with fishing being his favourite sport and his large collection of tropical and marine aquariums coming a close second. He leaves to mourn his parents Veronica and Ken, his eldest sister Ann and husband Charles, his other sister Catherine and husband Bryan and his partner Maz. St David's and St Patrick's RC Church, where a Mass was held, was filled to capacity by his relatives and many friends including old workmates from CBL Ceramics. The bearers were Alexander Hesse, Mark Davies, Mark Prewitt, Jonathan Morgans-Hurley, Bryan Jones and Charles Hesse. There were lots of beautiful floral tributes. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

MRS J. R. MORGAN NEW HEDGES The death occurred peacefully at Bush House Nursing Home on Tuesday, February 22nd, of Mrs Joslyn Rose Morgan, formerly of 1 Crestville, New Hedges. She was 88. Joslyn was a native of Pembroke, being the youngest daughter of Jane and Philip Phillips, Middle Farm. In 1944 she married Leslie Morgan, youngest son of John and Amelia Morgan, who lived at the neighbouring farm of Winters Hall. In 1948 they moved to Tresiencyn, Croesgoch, where they farmed until Leslie's retirement in 1969. They then moved back to the south of the county, settling in Manorbier, where sadly Leslie predeceased her in 1976. In 1983 Joslyn moved to New Hedges where she continued to live until 2001. Joslyn's great passion was gardening, in which she was able to fully indulge after retiring. She gained great pleasure bringing colour and beauty to the large gardens in Manorbier and New Hedges. Never one to be daunted by the size of the challenge, Joslyn continued to be a keen gardener right up till 2001, when she moved to Bush House Nursing Home. Family left to mourn include Philip, Desmond, Stephen (sons) and their families, Iris (sister), and other family members. The funeral was held on the March 8th at St James' Church, Manorbier, followed by interment at Trefangor Cemetery, Llanddewi Velfrey, with the service being conducted by the Rev Victor Millgate. Bearers were Desmond and Stephen (sons), John, David and Christopher (grandsons). Funeral arrangements were by John Roberts and Son, 51 Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.

Mrs M. DOUGHTY TENBY (formerly of Epsom, Surrey and Sidmouth, Devon) The funeral took place on March 22nd of Marjorie Doughty (nee Stevens) who died peacefully, aged 94, on March 7th at Belmont Court Residential and Nursing Home, Tenby. Marjorie was born in St Just in Cornwall. She married Bill Doughty in 1934 and they lived in London, Manchester and Stoke on Trent before retiring to Sidmouth in Devon and ultimately to Epsom, Surrey. In 2004 Marjorie moved to Belmont Court in Tenby. She leaves, with memories of a happy life, her son, Gordon and daughter-in-law Gillian (Hook), daughters Shirley and Hilary, sons-in- law, Harry and Ian, grandchildren Simon, Laura Hannah and Jamie. Great grandchildren Jasmine, Beatrice, Samuel and Edward. The funeral service took place in Leatherhead in Surrey. Funeral arrangements were made by W and M J Rossiter and Sons of Tenby and L. Hawkins of Leatherhead.

MR P. H. RICHARDS TENBY The funeral took place recently at St Mary's Church, Tenby, of Mr Peter Hedley Richards of 79 Knowling Mead, Tenby. Aged 73, he died peacefully on March 2nd. Mr Richards was born in Tenby, and on leaving school worked with his father, Thomas Benjamin Richards, in his trawler. He later joined SWEB, retiring after 40 years, and also served for 25 years as a sergeant in the Territorial Army. He followed many generations of his family by joining the lifeboat which he served on for over 35 years. When younger, he played rugby for Tenby United and continued to enjoy watching the team in later life. He also loved to play cards with his friends in the Evergreen on a Sunday night and enjoyed a few pints in the 'Dogs Home' on a Saturday night. Predeceased by his first wife Margaret in 1976, second wife Sheila in 1992 and daughter Elizabeth, he is survived by his daughters Lynne and Ann, sons-in-law Conway and David, step-daughter Jane, step-sons Martin and Gary, son-in-law Chris, daughter-in-law Debbie, together with grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers Reginald and Joshua, sister-in-law Jean, also Mair and brother-in-law Tony. He was also predeceased by his brother Stanley and sister Hazel. The funeral service was followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn. The Rector, Canon David Jenkins, officiated. There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu to the RNLI Tenby branch and Macmillan Nurses c/o the funeral directors, W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby.

MRS D. M. JENKINS SAUNDERSFOOT The funeral took place on Thursday of Mrs Dorothy Mary Jenkins of 37 Scandinavia Heights, Saundersfoot. She died at Withybush Hospital the previous Sunday, aged 102. She is survived by her son, Clarence William and daughters Eileen, Beryl and Mavis. The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium. There were family flowers only with donations in lieu to Tenby Cottage Hospital, c/o the funeral directors, W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby.

MR R. J. ROGERS BURTON THE funeral took place on Monday, March 21st at Sardis Chapel, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, of Richard (Dick) Rogers. He was 80. He died at his home on March 12th having been a patient for two weeks on Ward 10 at Withybush Hospital. Dick was born at Sardis Cross Farm, the youngest of the six children of Jimmy and Sarah Jane Rogers. He was the last surviving member of the Rogers family. He loved to reminisce about the Burton and Rosemarket Home Guard, the local characters and their night-time exercises in the parish. He was a lifelong supporter of Sardis chapel and a friend to the community. A farmer and a countryman through and through his great love was horses and going to point-to-point races. The service at the chapel and crematorium was conducted by the Rev Linda Woollacott assisted by Rev Chris Barnes. The organist was Mrs Diane Campbell. The bearers were friends - Penry Nash, Rhys Jones, Graham Thomas and Phillip Davies. Principal mourners were John and Sheila Hayman, Michael and Margaret Richards, Susan Brien, Michael and Trish Pyart, Richard and Joanna Hayman, David and Sarah Rees, Jayne Richards, Faye Richards, Lucy Richards, Shane Morgan (nephews and nieces); Gordon Pyart (brother-in-law); Berti Griffiths (cousin); Luke and Toby Hayman, Charlotte and George Rees. There were family flowers only, donations in lieu to Ward 10, care of Sister Linda Doyle. The funeral was directed by Mr Glyn Thomas and Son, Freystrop.

MRS P. M. DAVIES SAUNDERSFOOT The death occurred on March 14th, at Park House Court, Tenby, of Phyllis Mair Davies, of Swn-yr-Awel, Whitlow, Saundersfoot, who was fondly known at Greenhill school as PM. The funeral took place at St Issells church on March 21st. Phyllis was born in Parr, in Cornwall, but spent her earlier life in Nelson, Mid Glamorgan, attending the local primary school before moving on to Caerphilly Grammar school for girls. To be a teacher was Phyllis' great ambition, and to attain her teaching qualification she attended Barry Teacher's Training College. After qualifying she went back to Cornwall for her first post, at Lostwithiel, later returning to the valleys to teach at Pontlottyn Secondary school and Bargoed Secondary school for Girls. She then accompanied her husband, Gwynfor, to Cresselly on his appointment as headteacher at Jeffreyston VC school. Phyllis stopped teaching for a time but was soon back, teaching at Coronation school, Pembroke Dock and then the new Greenhill school in 1961. Gwynfor's appointment as headteacher of Saundersfoot Primary school caused a move to Swn yr Awel at Whitlow and it was at Saundersfoot and Greenhill, Phyllis was able to make use of the many talents she possessed. She taught girl's PE, enabling youngsters to travel the county to display their sporting prowess. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme became her great extra-curricular activity. Phyllis represented Pembrokeshire on the Wales Advisory Council for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, making many journeys to various parts of Wales. Her proudest moments were to accompany award winners to Buckingham Palace and St James Palace, acting as a steward at many award ceremonies. She joined the English department and eventually became a senior teacher in charge of careers and guidance. In 1981, she decided she would take a year out of the classroom and did a diploma course at Swansea University in careers and guidance. On her retirement in 1986, she became more involved in life in the community of Saundersfoot. Phyllis had already been president of the Tenby and Narberth National Union of Teachers and was also a former president of the Inner Wheel Club of Saundersfoot and a member of the Saundersfoot Barnardos committee and the Saundersfoot branch of RNLI. Phyllis obtained great satisfaction from being a Sunday school teacher both as a young person in Nelson and later on at St Issells church. Walking was her main interest and in latter years she belonged to a group of walkers. Phyllis was the wife of Gwynfor and mother of Jane and son-in-law Paul. She also leaves to mourn sister Gwen and brother-in-law Ivor, brother Alan and sister-in-law Margaret. Elder sister Margery was unable to attend due to illness. There were numerous nieces and nephews present. The church was full of friends, neighbours and representatives of many organisations in the village. Officiating clergy were Rev Canon Michael Butler, Rev Canon Glyn Evans and Rev Robin Webley. Mr Newman Vincent gave a personal tribute to Phyllis during the service. Bearers were Ian Nicholls, Lional Allan, Tom Griffiths and Noel Ebsworth. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Stewart Treharne of E. C. Thomas and Son, funeral directors, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside.

MR N. JENKINS CASTLEMORRIS The funeral took place on March 11th, of Mr Norman Jenkins, who died on March 7th, aged 77. Norman was born in Castlemorris and in his younger days was known to many as Norman the Green. He remained in Castlemorris, spending all his working life at Penfeidr. He was recently predeceased by his wife Una, to whom he had been married for 53 years. He loved to spend time with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who called him Gooby. He was a kind and generous man who will be dearly missed all. He leaves to mourn: Gilbert and Susan, Denis and Cathy (sons and daughters-in-law); Stasia and Alan (daughter and partner); Karen, Nicci and Maria, Anthony, Chris and Heledd, Claire and Daniel, Becky and Gareth (grandchildren); Mike, Joe, Dawn, James and Alice (their wives and partners); Kirsten, Sean and Kyle, Caitlin, Tomas, Carys and Catrin, Shaun and Ioan (great-grandchildren); together with his brother John and family members too numerous to mention. The service at The Chapel of Rest, Feidr Castell, Fishguard, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn, was conducted by Rev Emlyn Jones. The bearers were Eric Lewis, Ronald and Harries Jenkins (nephews) and Alan Richards (friend and neighbour). There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu for the Noah's Ark Appeal (children's hospital for Wales) being received by HSBC Bank, Fishguard.

MRS M. A. WILLIAMS HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place on Thursday, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, of Mrs Mary Williams, aged 82, who died at Withybush Hospital on March 21st, after a short illness. The funeral service was conducted by Father McGreal. Mary was born in Liverpool and moved after her marriage to the late Roy Williams in 1940 to Haverfordwest. She worked for many years in the County St Thomas Hospitals and subsequently until her retirement in the maternity unit at Withybush Hospital. Mary was always full of fun and will be sadly missed. Left to mourn are: Francis (son); Marion (daughter-in-law); Jenny and Jonathan (grandchildren). The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.
