Peter tastes success

Pembrokeshire's finest meat products scooped awards in the first leg of a national competition open to every independent butcher in Wales.

The Meat Promotion Wales (Hybu Cig Cymru) event at Swansea, attracted 310 entries from butchers, including Yerbeston Gate Farm Shop and the Preseli Gold Sausage Factory in Fishguard.

The products were evaluated by respected industry figures and consumer representatives who awarded marks for external appearance, ease of cutting, texture and structure, internal appearance, colour, taste and smell.

Yerbeston Gate Farm Shop, taken over 12 months ago by Andrew Eastwood and his family, scooped six awards.

They came away with three gold awards for their sausages and burgers, which are all made on the premises. There were a further three silver awards for other varieties of sausage including pork, apple and cider.

Graham Titchener, marketing executive for Meat Promotion Wales, said the event was a great showcase for butchers to demonstrate, promote and market the tremendous range of exceptionally high quality products they produced.

"It is an important opportunity to demonstrate to the consumer the quality and innovation of the Welsh butchery products,'' he said. "Last year's winners have without exception generated substantial new business as a result of their success."
