Is it time to re-examine LNG issues?

DEAR EDITOR, - The innovative tidal project developed and tested in the Milford Haven Waterway has just lost its funding from the Welsh Assembly and is unable to develop off the St Davids coast to produce energy for the local area.

This is in direct contrast to the welcome given by the statutory authorities to the hazardous LNG terminals and the associated power stations.

Long-term renewable methods of power production of a size and nature in keeping with the location and causing minimal harmful effects are essential for the future national and local energy supply.

The primary aim of the multi-national companies developing the huge LNG terminals and associated power stations is to produce profits for their financial firms.

If their primary objective was to secure the national energy supply for the future, then logically they would chose a safe site where a major incident would not terminate supply.

The companies involved and the local, regional and national governments, have all shown little concern during the planning stages of these developments for the local population, environment and indigenous industries.

Is it time for the statutory authorities to look again at the real issues at stake in the LNG operations?

ELISABETH COURT Lee-Mar, Cosheston.
