Unique building should be preserved

DEAR EDITOR, - While I am grateful for the report in your March 16th edition of the presentation of a petition from the Civic Society to the County Council leader Councillor John Davies, on the proposed disposal of the Shire Hall, Haverfordwest, I must disclaim the remarks credited to me, but not their substance.

They were part of a longer statement from the society's secretary, Mr Barrie Burgess. I fully endorse these remarks, as also the statement made by our chairman, Mr Geoffrey Foster.

My part in the deputation was to thank the council leader for his courtesy in meeting with us and his willingness to do so.

I pointed out my personal pride in the community in which I reside and, although not being Pembrokeshire-born, two of my sons were born in Haverfordwest and I had served much of my ministry in the county.

Hence my concern that this unique building be preserved and appropriately developed in keeping with the dignity of the town and county of Haverfordwest.

BISHOP J. IVOR REES president, Haverfordwest Civic Society Llys Dewi, 45 Clover Park, Haverfordwest.
