CALVES (45): A similar entry to the previous week once again saw the best quality beef calves meeting a very good demand, with several farmers around the sale ring looking for rearing calves.

Top price bull was £160 for an Aberdeen Angus presented by Phillips, Deers Park Farm, Laugharne who also presented the top price heifer at £132 for a Limousin. There were less Friesian bulls presented, which resulted in an improved trade, with a top price of £17 and an overall average of £11.50.

HEIFERS: £132 (Lim) from Phillips, Deers Park Farm, Laugharne also £82 (AA); £100 (BB) from Worthing & Partners, Maencochyrwyn, Login.

There were increased entries in all sections which sold as follows.

NEW SEASON LAMBS.

An entry of 46 saw the best quality mid weight lambs meeting a very strong demand and selling to a top price of 211.2p per kilo for 35.5 kilo lambs presented by Rees, Medelfyw Farm, Felinfoel with other selling to 173.3p per kilo for 30 kilos presented by Bowen, Brynteilo, Penybont with the overall average at 159.77p per kilo. Top price per head was £75 paid for the 35.5 kilo lambs presented by Rees, Medelfyw.

HOGGETTS. Sold to an overall average of 111.68p per kilo with a top price of 122.50p per kilo for 40 kilo hoggetts presented by Howells, Penlan, Bancyfelin. Top price per head was £54 for 50 kilo hoggetts presented by John, Pantyderi Farm, Whitland. QUOTATIONS: LAMBS:

Light Lambs to max 173.30p per kilo averaged 159.20p Standard Lambs to max 211.20p per kilo averaged 162.36p Medium Lambs to max 145.10p per kilo averaged 144.05p

HOGGETTS:

Standard Hoggetts to max. 118.20p per kilo averaged 109.86p Medium Hoggetts to max. 122.50p per kilo averaged 112.64p Heavy Hoggetts to max. 109.00p per kilo averaged 104.00p Other Hoggetts to max. 99.04p per kilo averaged 86.62p

Non Approved Hoggetts sold to a top price of £35 and averaged £27.50.

CULL EWES AND RAMS:

Another large entry of some 418 sold to a slightly improved trade, particularly on the heavier ewes. Top price was £67 from Condell, Pantyglien, Abergwili and averaged £43.75 with other selling at £66 from Rees, Avola, Red Roses, £63.50 from Price, Holly Thorn, Upland Arms and £60 from Thomas, Carreg Llys, White Mill. Cull rams sold to £34.50 and averaged £29.20 with light ewes averaging £22.10 and heavier types £43.75.
