MRS ANNA GIFFORD CARDIGAN Anna Gifford of Cardigan, who died recently aged 57, was the originator of the Youth Theatre and a leading figure in the founding of the Plaid-Green political alliance, which led to the election of MP Cynog Dafis to Parliament. Her work spread worldwide and her untimely death, of an illness contracted while working in Romania, came just eight months after the birth of her granddaughter Arwen. The work she did with Theatr Fforum Cymru was constructive, committed and farsighted and her patience and support of young people helped build their confidence and self-esteem in a special way. She stood for office in a local government election in Cardigan, and despite her unpolitical, unprofessional approach and her highly individual dress code, was very popular and almost got in. She followed the founding of the Youth Theatre by helping start Theatr Fforum Cymru, and her daughter Deri took over the former. Preparing and staging drama aimed at certain age groups for local organisations, they pioneered "emotional intelligence" drama work with young people in Wales and the UK.
