Constituency on a knife-edge

PUNTERS are predicting a knife-edge contest for the Preseli Pembrokeshire seat in tomorrow's (Thursday) General Election.

If the swing to the Conservatives is strong enough, local boy Stephen Crabb could take the seat from Labour and possibly become Wales's only Tory MP.

While bookies were giving Labour's candidate Sue Hayman a slight edge, the result will depend on the turnout of voters, and whether disillusioned Labour supporters decide to hang in with Tony Blair or turn to the Tories, Plaid Cymru's Matt Mathias, the Liberal Democrats' Dewi Smith, Molly Scott Cato, Wales Green Party; Patricia Bowen, Socialist Labour Party, or Jim Carver, United Kingdom Independence Party.

In Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, sitting member, Labour's Nick Ainger - despite a reduced majority at the last election - is expected to retain his seat.

He faces David Morris, Conservative; John Allen Liberal Democrat; John Dixon, Plaid Cymru; Alexander Daszak, Legalise Cannabis Alliance; and Nick Turner, who is not representing any party.

The count for the two constituencies will be held at a new venue - Cedar Court, Haven Head Business Park, Milford Haven.

The 145 polling stations throughout the two constituencies will be open from 7am to 10pm.
