County cricket: Division One Carew (121 for 8) drew with Haverfordwest (188 for 8)

A sparkling 94 from Phil Kirkby set champions Haverfordwest on the road to the better of the draw in their table-topping clash at Carew.

Kirkby rapped 11 fours and three sixes before he was caught on the boundary within one more big hit of a century.

He shared a partnership of 121 with opener Danny Potter, who played the anchor role admirably for his 42 runs, and, although Town lost wickets in their chase for late runs, their final tally was always going to be a challenging one.

It assumed mountainous proportions as Carew slumped to 8 for 2 but the village side battled throughout their 45 overs and still had two wickets left at the finish to secure a draw.

But Haverfordwest picked up the majority of the points - 23 to Carew's nine.

Simon Wood was the pick of the Carew bowlers with 5 for 37 and Tim Hicks grabbed 2 for 46, including the prized scalp of Kirkby as Brian Hall clung to the catch at long off.

Simon Williams and Adrian Griffiths grabbed the respective wickets of Martin Scourfield (played on) and Simon Wood (caught behind) before Rob Scourfield and Brian Hall steadied things down.

Steve Phillips picked up three wickets as Carew slumped to 64 for 6 and Matthew Johns struck at the other end to shift Steve Cole.

Huw Scriven claimed three catches and a neat stumping and Williams ended up with 2 for 27.

There was also a wicket for Clive Tucker as Haverfordwest retained control.

Skipper Rob Scourfield contributed a typically gritty 40, including six fours, and former captain Darren Thomas steered Carew to the draw with 33 not out, including a six and three fours.
