Carew move second

County Cricket: Division One Carew (171 for 3) beat Neyland (170 for 9)

Carew leap-frogged over opponents Neyland into second place thanks to an unbeaten stand of 97 between Martin Scourfield and Phil Jones which saw them to a seven wicket victory.

Fortunes ebbed and flowed as Neyland made a bright start after being asked to bat first, slumped to 50 for 5 but fought back via Andrew Miller and Patrick Hannon in a stand of 83 to set Carew a challenging target.

Carew also started well but lost two wickets in quick succession to stand at 74 for 3 before Scourfield (two sixes and three fours as he carried his bat for 67) and Jones (six boundaries in his 45 not out) took them home with over three overs in hand.

Greg Miller started like a train as he scored 33 of Neyland's first 37 runs in eight overs.

Simon Wood (3 for 21) and Aled Davies (2 for 23) helped Carew gain the initiative before Andrew Miller stroked 43 and Patrick Hannon supported with 37 not out.

Carew skipper Rob Scourfield then finished off the innings with 2 for 22.

Brian Hall made a similarly bright start for Carew with 26 of the first 38 runs before he was trapped lbw by Ian Charles, who was again a model of economy with his medium pacers.

Simon Wood shrugged off a sore side to score 20 before he and Steve Cole fell in quick succession to John Jones.

It was then that Martin Scourfield and Jones intervened and Neyland found themselves shoved out of second place by their experienced opponents.

Cricket lovers will be delighted to hear that Carew stalwart Tony Ansell was back watching his team after his spell in hospital and, although Tony won't be up to resuming his duties on the ground for a while, he was delighted to be able to sit, as usual, near the tennis courts alongside Jill and John Donnachie. Welcome back Tony.
