Popworks to transform into youth centre

Young people in Pembrokeshire are to receive a major boost, thanks to Objective One funding.

The well-known Popworks building in Fishguard is to be transformed into a fully functional youth centre, with the aid of a £155,956 Objective One grant from the Weslh Assembly. The grant will be match-funded by Pembrokeshire County Council, the WDA and Pride.

The Popworks will accommodate the successful Point youth project, as well as providing other facilities for young people.

Andrew Davies, Assembly minister for economic development and transport said it would give young people the opportunity to develop their skills and provide a place for them to spend time together.

"This project will support sustainable economic development in the Pembroke-shire area by specifically encouraging young people to return and remain in Fishguard," he said. Councillor John Davies, leader of Pembrokeshire County Council, welcomed the news.

"The Popworks project is an integral part of the Fishguard regeneration plan and overall funding package," he said. "Together with plans for the development of a new marina at Goodwick and the revitalisation of Fishguard town centre, this offers significant prospects for the people of north Pembrokeshire."

The £394,308 project will see the installation of digilabs in the youth centre from CREDU, which are also funded via Objective One.

Young people will have access to the internet with lessons in information technology literacy and website development.

Workshops will also be available in arts and crafts, photography, film-making, drama, dance and dress-making.

Environmental projects will be carried out for young people to help with the clean up of beaches in the area, and they will be given first aid and life saving lessons if required. The Youth Centre will also have housing and career advice to help young people develop their futures and young parent's workshops to give support advice if needed.
