County cricket Division One: Lamphey (110 all out) lost to Haverfordwest (114 for 7)
Lamphey came close to creating the shock result of the day, and perhaps of the season, as they scored 110 all out thanks almost entirely to a battling 75 by Rob Mathias and then reduced Haverfordwest to 54 for 5 on a wicket where runs were at a premium.
But then Adrian Griffiths showed just why he is The Town skipper as he followed his miserly 3 for 8 analysis from 10.4 overs by scoring 22 not out in support of Huw Scriven's 31, striking the winning boundary to ease his side home by three wickets but mightily close to losing their unbeaten tag in the league during this and last season.
Lamphey were also unable to make headway after being asked to bat first, scoring only 15 without loss from 12 overs and reduced to 36 for 2 after 21 overs.
As well as Griffiths' spell, Simon Williams grabbed 3 for 26, Clive Tucker 3 for 39 and Matthew Johns 1 for 27 as Mathias belted seven fours and a six from the 91 balls he faced, with no-one else able to managed double figures as Alan Lewis, Hywel Gibbs and Wayne Shanklin were next in line with eight runs apiece.
But then the visitors also slumped from 23 without loss to 23 for 2 and then 54 for 5 as Grant Cole and Hywel Gibbs grabbed two wickets each and Rizwan Hassan claimed the key wicket of Karl Rhead when the in-form Haverfordwest vice-captain played on with 15 to his name.
Scriven and Griffiths survived some strong appeals for lbw and both played and missed before gradually turning defence into attack as Scriven punched three fours and reached 31 before he lobbed a catch to Gibbs off William Silcox - but by then the pair had contributed a vital 51 runs to the cause.
There was a further alarm as Matthew Johns was bowled by Cole to give the Lamphey bowler figures of 3 for 30 alongside Gibbs' 2 for 25 in 12 overs but Griffiths remained calm and his second boundary saw The Town maintain their thrust for a second unbeaten league season and confirming Lamphey's drop into division two.
