County cricket Division Two Pembroke (171 for 9) beat Johnston (72 all out)
Pembroke celebrated promotion as they easily accounted for Johnston by 99 runs and in the process narrowed the gap between them and Hook at the top of the table to 19 points with three matches left.
Defeat also left Johnston seriously embroiled at the other end of the table as they batted badly after restricting Pembroke to a manageable 171 for 9, with Steve Jenkins (3 for 29) and Gary James (3 for 48) the principal wicket-takers and Steve James claiming the prized scalp of Matthew Mitchell for 44 with the score on 55.
Mitchell had already slammed six fours and a six before James got him but Pembroke were able to count on good performances from Barry Evans, anchoring the innings with 40 in 37 overs, Colin Kaijaks (20) and Nigel Phillips (19 not out).
Johnston totally collapsed after tea against the bowling of Kevin Jenkins and Daniel Williams so that they were really in the mire at 22 for 8 before Gary James arrived at the crease as No 10 batsman and blitzed 40 runs, including four boundaries and a six.
Jenkins finished with 4 for 23 in 12 overs and Williams claimed 3 for 15 before Nigel Phillips (2 for 6) and Anton John (1 for 23) sealed the Pembroke success so that they could celebrate a welcome return to division one.
