Karate kids claim prizes

The Milford Haven Karate Club held their annual tournament at the Meads Sports and Leisure Centre recently, satisfying a huge crowd of supporters with some excellent scoring techniques.

The day started with some fine Kata (forms). The junior Kata category saw Elliot Rivers coming first, Perry Maile second and Scott Townley third. The senior Kata was won by David Lewis, Perry Maile took second and James Dyson third.

The Kumite (free sparring) kicked off with the Pee-wees, which proved very exciting, although on times very tearful. Scott Townley took first, Matthew Coles second and Emily George third.

The junior Kumite saw young Perry Maile reach yet another final to take first place. Jade Maile came second and Craig Walters third.

The cadet Kumite saw another another win for David Lewis, Corrine John taking second and Luke Owen coming third.

The senior category was an explosive event which saw a very keen Jamie Phillips scoring with some excellent techniques and boasting unbeaten rounds to claim first place.

James Dyson took second and Claire Owen, bravely holding her own against the men, came third.

The award for best technique of the day went to six year old Annie Williams, who astounded judges with her grit, determination and spirit.

Club instructor Kevin John praised his students for putting on such a fine display and hopes they all continue to do well at both club and national tournaments in the future.

The referees on the night were Gary Solomon and Anthony Dyson. Amy Wareham and Melanie John were the scorers.

Club lessons are held at the Meads on Tuesdays from 5pm to 6pm for under nines, from 6pm to 7pm for fitness and sparring, and on Thursdays from 7pm to 9pm for juniors and seniors.
