Father and son jailed on appeal for vicious assault

A father and son allowed to walk free by an 'unduly lenient' judge after a vicious assault on the head chef at their Haverfordwest restaurant have been jailed by the Appeal Court.

Appeal Court judges last Tuesday ordered that Shusing Jim, aged 52, and Steven Jim, 26, serve 26-month jail terms for the attack on Oriental Palace head chef Fuk Wan Hau last June.

The pair, who had admitted wounding with intent, were given 50-week sentences suspended for two years at Swansea Crown Court last October, and ordered to pay £1,293 in court costs.

Currently attending a family funeral in Hong Kong, both men had to report to police to start their sentences on Monday.

Mr Hau, who was Mr Jim senior's business partner, as well as chef in the family's restaurant, was punched, kicked, and beaten while unconscious after mounting tensions between the three soon after the new restaurant's opening.

Lord Justice Hooper said Mr Hau received kicks and punches to the body and face, while the attack also involved 'the continued use of a bottle and metal implements against the victim once unconscious'.

Violence flared after bitter discussions about dissolving the partnership, with a confrontation breaking out in the restaurant kitchen.

Later on, the unconscious Mr Hau was rushed to Withybush Hospital, where he was treated for multiple lacerations to the head and body, along with leg fractures.

The case came before the Appeal Court last week when the Solicitor General, Mike O'Brien MP, petitioned for an increase in the sentences passed on the pair.
