Park says goodbye to animals after 19 years

Animals will no longer be a feature at a Pembrokeshire theme park following a decision by the owners to change the focus of the business.

The John family, who were farming before they diversified to establish Heron's Brook, Narberth, are closing the animal park and relaunching the business as an all-year-round golf and leisure venture.

"We have had a successful last couple of years as far as attendance figures are concerned and are an established business now fortunate enough to be in a position to redevelop Heron's Brook in such a way as to encourage visitors to a high quality attraction which will be open all the year," said managing director, David John.

For 19 years, animals had been a key factor in the success of Heron's Brook.

But the pressure on businesses which bring the public into contact with animals has increased considerably in recent years.

The Park's 20th anniversary brings with it exciting new plans for major investment over the next three years creating more full-time jobs.

Due to the scale of the new project, the animal park will not re-open but the pitch and putt course, gardens and tea room will be open for business as usual during the 2006 season.

"Although in its early stages of planning, we have a clear vision of a high quality, all-year-round golf and leisure package which will attract new visitors to Pembrokeshire while keeping loyal to our local community," said Mr John.

"We are currently in discussion with the local planning department and the Wales Tourist Board and an application will follow shortly through Curtis Blain Ltd."
