LNG plan passed by National Park

pembrokeshire Coast National Park planners last week approved an application for the latest alterations to work on the South Hook LNG terminal, Milford Haven.

The authority planning officer's report said: "With all large projects, particularly major engineering projects, detailed design work continues as the development progresses."

The officer said the changes were relatively minor and were, in the main, alterations in the position and size of the project's features.

There were seven letters of objection to the application - one of which was from pressure group Safe Haven and was accompanied by a petition of 4,000 signatures.

Among other things, the objectors claimed the environmental statement was flawed, more information was needed and the original statement was not complete as it did not take into account secondary effects, such as the industrial effect on house prices.

The protesters went on to say that the application gave the authority the second opportunity to review the principle of the development.

The authority's report claimed these objections were based on a misunderstanding of the legal position as to the requirements of an environmental statement.

There were no objections from the town council and agencies which were consulted.

However, Councillor Michael Williams, a member of the planning committee said: "I'm becoming more and more uncomfortable with this development because there are so many unknowns.

"I would like to see the risk assessment, if it is available."

The authority later confirmed that Cllr Williams had been speaking as an individual as the safety aspects of the development did not come under its remit.
